Lemon Shark Research at Jupiter, FL beginning in 2007 -(10/9/06)

Dr. Samuel H. Gruber at the Bimini Biological Field Station (aka Sharklab) recently received grant money in order to proceed with their shark research in 2007. This money will considerably help the project to stay afloat. The team will consist of two students; Todd Gedemke and Artur Afonso (Portugal) as well as Walt Sterns, Bill Parks, Cheryl Carroll, and the owner and operator of the Bimini Biological Field Station, Dr. Samuel H. Gruber. Operations are planned to begin in late December 2006 and the team will work until the lemon sharks disappear (late February, early March 07). The primary effort will be to implant transmitters in as many female lemon sharks as possible and simultaneously take DNA samples. The males will not be focused on since they are nomadic and can only be tracked with satellite transmitters. However, the team does have one satellite transmitter from last year and will possibly place it on a single male. The owner of the WetPleasures Dive Shop, Roger Davis, is always willing to support this cause! We consider this research vital for our future generations! We need the help of anybody who thinks they can volunteer their time, financial resources, boats, fishing equipment, etc. Give us a call at the shop and we'll be happy to talk with you!
