Bimini Information Package

This information has been compiled for anyone who wishes to become involved in trying to stop the environmental destruction of North Bimini.

The information included here should give one a good understanding of the biological problems facing Bimini as a result of the Bimini Bay development project. Also, the newspaper articles and letters give a bit of history and offer insight into the attitude of the government, the developer, the residents of Bimini and the less than straightforward way events have unfolded. Hopefully this will help when developing a strategy to convince the Bahamian Government that it needs to preserve the ecology of Bimini instead of destroying it.

The photo essay contains sixty-two images with detailed captioning and should serve to acquaint one with physical Bimini, the development and some of the impacts on the people who live there. Reviewing the photos first and then the letters and newspaper articles may be the best order.

Among the many letters and newspaper articles included here there is a lot of information and much worthwhile reading. Some that are particularly revealing about the root of the problem with respect to attitudes and less than accurate statements by the developer, his representatives and the Bahamian Government can be found in the folder “Mr. Capo’s Attitude”. After reviewing the video and the photo essay Mr. Capo’s words and those of his supporters seem absurd.

The contact list includes both Bahamian media and important government officials. The Bahamian Government will only respond to well publicized criticism and only if they feel pressure from their own people, foreign governments and the tourist industry. Any letters to government officials should also be copied to the press en mass. Also important is that no permanent changes that benefit Bimini will occur unless complaints are regularly reinforced with more criticism. The history of this project has shown that the politicians will wait to see if the opposition dies down and only act if they feel that it won’t.

Everyone is encouraged to send their thoughts to or engage the assistance of any media source anywhere in the world they feel might wish to publicize this problem, for example newspapers, trade and tourist magazines. Also, any environmental group, fishing organization, diving organization or other NGO that might consider helping with this problem should be contacted. The Bahamian Government is sensitive to anything that threatens their tourist industry. If they perceive that the negative publicity generated by their environmental transgressions is causing tourists to go elsewhere, they most likely will agree to preserve Bimini. Please feel free to make copies of any and all information contained here. Spreading the word is the most effective way to stop the destruction of this unique and biologically important island group. Saving Bimini is still an attainable goal – with everyone’s help.
